IRIDIUM EXTREME 9575 LBS SERVICE PLANS- LOCATION BASED SERVICES
Iridium Extreme 9575 LBS (Location Based Services) is a data service that allows you to cost-effectively send and receive short burst data transactions efficiently over the Iridium network. GPS Tracking on the Iridium Extreme 9575 goes over a channel on the Iridium network called LBS. LBS is different from the channel that sends voice, data, and SMS. The Iridium Extreme 9575 satellite phone has an integrated GPS. This allows you to send GPS tracking pings over the Iridium network, giving you coverage everywhere on the planet.
There are a few ways to use the Iridium Extreme 9575 as a Personal GPS Tracking Device. The most popular option is for the user to set the Iridium Extreme 9575 to utilize the SMS functionality of your service plan. Your airtime invoice will show an outbound SMS message for each time tracking information was sent.
For example, if you want to turn on tracking for a single day hike you have planned, you might select a 30-minute time interval and transmit over an 8-hour period. This means you would send about 16 SMS messages. On most Iridium service plans this would cost well under $10, which is not much for the feeling of safety and letting your family and friends know exactly where you are exploring. However, If you intend to use tracking services heavily on a year-round basis, it is more economical to use the Iridium Extreme 9575 LBS feature instead of SMS messaging to transmit your position reports. LBS is billed according to the total bytes of data transmitted.
LBS ON IRIDIUM EXTREME 9575 & HOW IT WORKS
Iridium LBS is a proprietary subset of a type of satellite transmission protocol called Iridium SBD (short burst data). Both LBS and SBD only send very small bits of data at a time – a max of 1 KB, 1000 bytes – so it is limited to data transmission like location reports, battery level or time/date which are extremely small in size.
GPS Tracking on the Iridium Extreme 9575 can be setup to send on regular intervals or to simply send out a position report every time the phone turns on and registers. Tracking on a regular schedule with the Iridium Extreme 9575 has the benefit of keeping friends and family back home updated at a routine progress but means that your phone needs to be powered on and registered with the network the entire time.
If you set your tracking to go out whenever you turn on your phone and register, you will receive less frequent position reports, but you’ll conserve power and not spend as much in airtime.

Questions & Answers
Q: What is the difference between the GPS Quick List Option vs. Message Options?
A: In the Message Options menu, Regular Updates will allow you to program one (1) recipient to receive regularly scheduled messages from you with your location. Once the recipient is programmed and a message frequency is selected, your designated contact will receive Regular Updates from you automatically. Quick GPS will allow you to send one (1) single location update to up to five (5) recipients programmed in your phone via messaging. To initiate a Quick GPS, press the Convenience Key located on the right side of your phone, obtain an updated location, select “Share” with the left option key, and select Quick GPS with the left option key.
Q: If a user is registered with the portal, will they send location updates via SMS along with their SBD messages?
A: No, if the user’s handset is registered with the portal, it will send automatic updates only via SBD. They always have the option of sending a manual SMS update.
Q: If I have activated the “Emergency” feature and it is programmed to call a phone number or an SMS message, how many calls will be placed to that number or SMS?
A: Depending on how the user programmed the phone, the phone will call or send an SMS message to your designated contact every 5 minutes.
Q: Can a user set it up to send location based updates via SMS and SBD simultaneously?
A: No, the status of the handset’s registration in the portal will determine whether an SMS or SBD message will be sent.
Q: Why are the LBS and Emergency SOS text messages not stored in the message “outbox”?
A: These messages are sent using SBD and are not stored as an outgoing SMS message. The portal provider has the ability to store the message history of your tracking and SOS messages.
